The annual fee a fund charges, expressed as a percentage of the money you have invested. For example, a 0.50% expense ratio means you pay $5 per year for every $1,000 invested. Lower is generally better, since fees are deducted from your returns year after year, though a slightly higher fee can be worth it for a fund whose holdings match your values.
